Plant Overview

In search of a simple yet attractive houseplant to start or add to your collection? The Wild Coffee plant (Psychotria Nervosa) may be just the thing. Easy to care for, this plant can thrive in a healthy balance of sun and shade, maintaining a luscious glossy exterior. In spring and summertime, it is known to sprout clusters of beautiful ivory flowers, as well as red berries that, much like coffee beans, can be roasted and enjoyed as a delicious treat.

Wild Coffee Plant - Care Practices

  • Light: Bright indirect light. This plant is tolerant of shade but not too much.
  • Water: Water thoroughly, allowing the top 3-5cm of soil to dry in between watering. Be sure to drain excess water.
  • Humidity: Appreciates higher levels of humidity (30%-50%)
  • Temperature: Average from 18°C to 30°C.
  • Fertilizer: We recommend a 20-20-20 liquid fertilizer (half a teaspoon diluted in about a gallon of water.)
  • Soil: Mildly acidic to neutral soil (6.1-7.5pH).
  • Propagation: Harvest fruits once ripe, allow seeds to fully dry before replanting.
  • Repotting: Can be done every 12-18 months. Choose a pot that is 5cm larger in diameter than the original pot.
  • Cleaning Tip: Gently wipe down with a damp cloth to remove dust. Remove yellowing leaves right away.
  • Toxicity: Berries are perfectly safe for humans. Keep away from pets.

Wild Coffee Plant - Common Problems

Why is my Wild Coffee Plant wilting?

This plant is generally tough and drought-tolerant, but can occasionally wilt in low humidity, so ensure the soil and leaves are getting enough moisture.

The leaves on my Wild Coffee Plant are falling off…

This could be due to sun-scalding or salt build-up, which most commonly occur during freezing periods. Make sure you protect your plant during the winter months by keeping it warm.

I think my Wild Coffee Plant has mold!

On rare occasions, these coffee plants can be susceptible to soft scale, causing sooty mold and fungus, reducing their growth and sheen. You can contact a specialist to remedy this, or alternatively, invest in pest oil or vinegar as an effective home remedy.

Signs of Overwatering

Limp, yellowing leaves.

Common Pests

Can attract birds as well as pollinators like bees, wasps, flies and beetles.

Can the Wild Coffee Plant take full sun?

It is advised to keep your Wild Coffee Plant in partial/indirect sunlight for the best results.
