Plant Care

Key Benefits: Easy Care
Not only is the String of Dolphins an extremely fun plant to own, but it’s also really easy to look after! It doesn’t have very specific care requirements and is quite tolerant to drought and medium light levels, meaning it’s a great plant for beginners and rookies!

String of Dolphins - Sweet like Cinnamon
If you’re lucky and given the right conditions, your String of Dolphins will produce small, tightly compacted flowers during the fall - and they are said to smell like cinnamon!

Where does it come from?

The String of Dolphins is a hybrid of the String of Pearls (Senecio rowleyanus) and Candle Plant (Senecio articulatus), both of which are native to South Africa, where they grow in dry climates.

Plant Care Tips: String of Dolphins

Light: Enjoys a bright spot. Try placing it in direct sunlight for 6 hours a day, preferably near a south-facing window.
Water: Water once the soil has dried out. Give your plant a good soak until water starts to run out of drainage holes. Water less frequently during winter months.
Humidity: This plant will cope well with average humidity levels.
Temperature: The optimum temperature for this plant is around 22°C. During the dormant period, it will tolerate temperatures as low as 10-13°C.
Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix.
Fertilizer: Does not require much fertilizer. Feed once or twice a year with a cactus fertilizer if desired.
Propagation: The best way to propagate your String of Dolphins is through stem cuttings.
Pets: Toxic. Keep away from pets and children.

String of Dolphins - Common Issues

The leaves of my String of Dolphins are flat. Am I doing something wrong?

The leaves of your plant may start to lose shape or flatten as a result of overwatering. Make sure to only water your plant when the soil feels dry. Once you’ve adjusted your watering routine, your plant’s leaves should start to return to normal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my String of Dolphins have brown leaves?

Brown leaves can be a sign of either overwatering or underwatering. You should water your plant when the soil has dried out, which will be around once a week during the growing season and less frequently during the winter months. Adjusting your watering regime should prevent further issues.

How often should I repot my String of Dolphins? This plant does not require regular repotting. The String of Dolphins actually prefers to be slightly root-bound, and it is more likely to bloom in these conditions. If it starts to outgrow its pot, consider repotting it into a slightly larger pot with adequate drainage.

Common pests: Spider mites and mealybugs may attack your String of Dolphins. You can treat any infestations with neem oil or insecticidal soap.

*Decorative pots sold separately.
