Plant Overview

The Peperomia ‘Red Log’ belongs to the Peperomia Plant Family, which consists of around 500 ornamental plant species. Most are native to subtropical areas of South America, and this Peperomia ‘Red Log’ is from Bolivia. Compact in size and easy to care for, it makes a great houseplant and can also be suitable for planting in terrariums. It has dual coloured leaves which are dark green on the upper surface and an enticing shade of red underneath, forming erect rosette trailing stems.

How to Care for Alocasia ‘Black Velvet’

  • Light: Position this plant in a well-lit area, with bright in-direct sunlight. An east or west-facing window sill is well suited.
  • Water: As this plant is a succulent, it requires little watering - be careful not to over-water it. Only re-water once the soil has dried out, approximately every 10 days during summer. Water sparingly during the winter season.
  • Humidity: This plant likes low humidity. Avoid water settling on the leaves.
  • Temperature: This Peperomia is fairly tolerant of a wide range of temperatures but is happiest between 18 - 26 °C.
  • Fertiliser: Moderate fertilising needs. Feed every other week during the spring and summer with a water-soluble feed.
  • Soil: This plant demands well-draining soil. We recommend a potting mix with a high ratio of perlite or coarse sand to compost.
  • Propagation: This Peperomia is easy to propagate via stem and leaf cuttings.
  • Repotting: There is no need to re-pot regularly as this plant likes to be relatively pot-bound. Increase pot sizes by 5cm.
  • Toxicity: Not toxic to humans or pets.

Peperomia 'Red Log'  - Common Problems

Why does my Peperomia 'Red Log' look leggy and bare?

This is called etiolation and it’s a sign that your Peperomia is not receiving enough light. Too little light causes the plant to grow with long internodes make the stems weak and bare. Remedy this problem by moving your plant to an area in the house where it receives more hours of bright, indirect sunlight each day.

Why is my Peperomia 'Red Log' wilting?

With Peperomia’s, this is more commonly a symptom of overwatering than under-watering. Use your finger to test the moisture in the soil. The plant will not cope if it is sat in soggy soil and the soil should dry out well in between watering. Remove any dead leaves and avoid watering the plant until it is dry.

Is my Peperomia 'Red Log' susceptible to pests?

Fungus gnats are a common pest to this plant and can often flourish due to overwatering. They will inhabit the soil in the plant pot. Use an insecticidal soap spray to remedy this problem.
