Overview

Dracaena Lemon Lime belongs to Asparagaceae (the asparagus plant family) and it’s identifiable by its stunning broad leaves with lemony green edges. As the plant grows, it loses its initial leaves and forms bright green variegated foliage similar to corn stalks.

Highly fragrant flowers

Dracaena Lemon Lime plants rarely produce flowers. However, they may produce small, almost invisible white flowers when given indirect sunlight in summer. These flowers are highly fragrant, giving Dracaena Lemon Lime its name ‘Dracaena fragrans’.

Lemon Lime Dracaena: It’s good for you!

According to NASA, Dracaena plants play a vital role in air purification: The NASA Clean Air Plant Study indicated the plant aided the removal of indoor pollutants such as formaldehyde, xylene, and toluene.

Where does it come from?

Dracaena Lemon Lime is native to tropical Africa.

PlantX top tip: Regularly dusting the leaves of your Dracaena will help it photosynthesize properly and look its healthiest!

How to care for your Dracaena:

  • Light: Medium to bright indirect light
  • Water: Water when the top 5cm of the soil feel dry
  • Soil: Loose, well-drained potting mix; loamy soil amended with peat moss
  • Intolerances: Too much or too little sunlight
  • Fertilizer: Fertilize once a month with an organic houseplant fertilizer; best when fertilized spring through fall
  • Humidity: normal (about 40% - 60%) humidity levels
  • Temperature: 21°-24° C
  • Propagation: Usually propagated by stem cutting.
  • Repotting: For smaller desktop plants, every 12-18 months, and or larger floor plants, every 18-24 months.

Toxicity: Toxic to both cats and dogs, due to ‘saponin’, a chemical compound that is found in the plant.

Dracaena - Common Problems:

Drying and browning of the lower leaves

Drying and browning of the lower leaves are common among Dracaena plants. Prune these leaves with a clean pair of shears to keep your plant looking its best!

Leaves have brown tips and discoloration.

This is most often a sign of overwatering. Allow the soil to completely dry out before you water the plant again and reduce the amount of water you are giving it. Alternately, this can also be a sign of too much chlorine in the water your Dracaena is receiving. In this case, you can try using distilled water.

Leaves turning yellow

Usually accompanied by new growth falling, yellow leaves are an indication of overwatering. If you notice this happening, leave your dracaena to dry out fully and then reduce watering going forward.

Leaves appear dull and stained with brown and yellow spots

Diseases like fluoride toxicity and leaf spots make the fresh, vibrant leaves of the plant dull and dark, stained with yellow, brown leaf spots and brown tips of the leaves.

The best treatment is identifying the source of fluoride and eliminating it, and carefully pruning away any leaves with spots. This means doing an early repotting and possibly changing the type of soil or water you’re using.

Common Pests: spider mites and mealybugs.

FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

How do I tell when my Dracaena needs water?

The easiest way to tell if your Dracaena needs water is to feel the soil. If the top 5cm of the soil is dry then your plant is ready for a drink.

How can you tell the difference between overwatering and underwatering?

Determine which by feeling the leaf showing browning: if it feels crispy and light, it is under-watered. If it feels soft and limp, it is overwatered.

How fast does Dracaena grow?

Dracaena generally grows at a medium rate. When grown indoors, Lemon Lime Dracaena can be expected to grow to be about 1.5 meters tall at maturity, with a spread of 60cm.

How long can a Dracaena houseplant live?

Under ideal conditions, Dracaena can be expected to live for approximately 10 years.
