Overview

Hoya wayetii is a species of flowering plant in the genus Hoya native to the Philippines. Sometimes confused with Hoya kentiana or Hoya shepherdii, it has long, slender foliage that often has a red margin when exposed to sufficient sun.

Like many others in its genus, it has a vining growth habit and can be trained to trail as a hanging plant. The leaves are thick, variegated and deep green with red shading, the intensity of which is determined by the amount of light the plant receives.

Visually distinct and easily identifiable with its green foliage and beautiful markings on its leaves, the Hoya wayetii is undoubtedly one of those house plant types that stands out from the rest of its hoya family members.

PlantX top tip: Never be tempted to overwater Hoya Wayetii– you can always salvage an underwater wayetii, but it is often impossible to rescue one that has rotted roots due to over-excessive watering.

How to care for your Hoya Wayetii

  • Light: Bright indirect sunlight
  • Water: Low watering
  • Soil: Well-draining potting mix
  • Intolerances: Direct Sunlight, Water-logged soil
  • Fertilizer: 2-3 times a month during growing season
  • Humidity: 60-80%
  • Temperature: 16-29°C
  • Propagation: Stem cuttings, Water propagation, Air Layering
  • Repotting: Likes to be root-bound; repot when the pot is at full capacity or when you have to water it more than usual
  • Toxicity: Non-toxic

Hoya Wayetii- Common Problems

Yellowing leaves

This is a symptom of over-watering and water-logged soil. Drain the soil of excess water, and repot with a dry potting mix in a pot with good drainage. Water regularly in summers, but only sparingly in winters.

Black spots on leaves

This is due to Sooty mold, a fungus that appears on the leaves of Hoya plants as a black growth. It occurs when aphids, mealybugs and other sap-sucking pests secrete honeydew on the plant's leaves. You can remove them with a bit of diluted vinegar on a soft cloth.

Leaves falling off

This often means that the hoya got a cold draft or chill. Ensure the hoya is in a warm, humid location with plenty of indirect sunlight.

Buds falling off

If the buds are falling off before bloom, it can mean that the potting medium was too dry for too long, or too wet for too long. Make sure to check the soil regularly for moisture, and if the soil feels dry, water the plant.

Common Pests: Mealybugs, Fungus gnats, Aphids

FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

Are Hoya Wayetii an invasive species?

There is no indication that the Hoya plant is invasive.

Is Hoya Wayetii pet-friendly?

Yes, all varieties of Hoya plants are pet-safe, as they are listed with the ASPCA as being safe to grow around cats and dogs with no known toxins.

Should I mist my Hoya wayetii?

Misting is good for wayetii, as it increases humidity levels and prevents unwanted pests, but make sure to not over-water it, as that can lead to root rot.

How fast does Hoya Wayetii grow?

Hoya Wayetii is a very slow-growing plant. It can take as long as three years before the Hoya Wayetii actually has its first blooming flowers.
