If you’re lucky and if growing conditions are good enough, your Hoya Carnosa will produce beautiful, sweet-smelling flowers from spring to late summer!

Hoya Carnosa - Cascading Carnosa

The Hoya Carnosa is a vining plant, meaning it loves to be placed in a hanging basket or on top of a bookshelf where its leaves can cascade and trail wherever they please.

Where does it come from?

The Hoya Carnosa is found in the humid subtropical regions of Australia, Asia (the Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam), and the Fiji Islands, where it likes to vine and wrap around nearby trees.

Plant Care Tips: Hoya Carnosa

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid exposure to midday sun. Can tolerate partial shade and artificial light.
  • Water: Water your Hoya when the top half of soil has dried out and allow it to drain fully. Water more frequently in summer and less frequently in winter.
  • Humidity: As a tropical plant, the Hoya loves high humidity levels. Try misting the foliage regularly or keep it in the conservatory, greenhouse, or bathroom for an extra boost!
  • Temperature: Thrives at temperatures of 18-24°C. Try keeping it above 16°C. Avoid cold draughts and extreme temperatures.
  • Soil: Use an organic, well-draining potting mix.
  • Fertilizer: Feed once or twice a month with a diluted, all-purpose fertilizer during the growing season (spring to summer). No need to feed during winter.
  • Propagation: Propagate through stem cuttings during spring.

Pets: The sap contains latex which can irritate the skin. Keep away from pets and children.

Hoya Carnosa - Common Issues and Questions

Why does my Hoya Carnosa have burned leaves?

This is a sign that your plant is sunburned! Most plants don’t do well in direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves and cause them to drop off. Try relocating your Hoya to a place where it will receive bright but indirect sunlight.

My Hoya Carnosa has yellow leaves. What am I doing wrong?

Yellow leaves are most often a sign of overwatering. Hoyas are succulents and don’t do well when overwatered, so make sure that you’re only watering your plant when the soil feels dry. You should also check that the pot is draining correctly.

When should I repot my Hoya?

Hoyas generally enjoy being root-bound, but if you find that your plant has stopped growing, try transferring it to a slightly larger pot using a fresh potting mix.

Common pests: Mealybugs and spider mites are the most common pests you will find on your Hoya Carnosa. If you spot any infestations, treat them immediately with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
