Fishbone Cactus: “Queen of the Night"

After around 3 years, Fishbone Cacti start to bloom gorgeous fragrant white and yellow flowers. The blooms only open at night, giving it its nickname "Queen of the Night". A true marvel amongst its family!

Where is it from?

Fishbone Cacti originate from the hot humid forests in Mexico. Over there, you can find them dangling majestically from large trees!

How to Care for Fishbone Cactus

  • Light: Prefers bright light with at least 4 hours of direct light.
  • Water: Relatively drought tolerant and only needs watering when soil has completely dried. Water thoroughly and allow it to drain completely. Overwatering will cause the plant to rot from the inside out.
  • Humidity: Fishbone Cacti love humidity. Mist regularly to keep their foliage fresh and bright green.
  • Fertilizer: To help them grow faster, feed once a month during spring to summer, when the plant is actively growing.
  • Propagation: Stem cuttings

Is the Fishbone Cactus for me?

Is a cactus still a cactus, even if there are no spines? We think so! As houseplants, the Fishbone cactus is an extremely sought out-for plant for its easy care and unique look. They’re relatively drought-tolerant and only need watering once the soil has completely dried out. They thrive in bright indirect light and tolerate shade, making them perfect plants for offices, bathrooms, kitchens and living rooms.

Their quirky wriggly stems are the perfect addition for plant enthusiasts alike. We also recommend placing your plant high up on a shelf to mimic the plant's natural environment!

Fishbone Cactus - Common Problems

Why are my leaves going limp, discoloured, crispy and hard?

These issues can be symptoms of lack of water. When this happens, you need to start gradually increasing your plant's water intake. Give the plant a water bath and allow it to absorb as much water as it likes. After, make sure you water the plant every two weeks or when the soil has completely dried out. Try moving the plant to a shadier location so the water doesn’t evaporate as quickly.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I repot my Fishbone Cactus?

You can repot every 12-18 months. Choose a pot that is 5 cm larger in diameter than the original pot. Use a potting mix that’s suitable for cacti and succulents.

How should you take care of the Fishbone Cactus?

Allow the soil to dry completely between watering. Water thoroughly and drain any excess water completely. This plant typically only needs watering once every two weeks, maximum. Reduce watering in the winter to once a month. Overwatering will cause the plant to rot from the inside out. Place your plant in a spot that receives bright light with at least 4 hours of direct light.

How do I clean my Fishbone cactus?

To clean your plant, gently spray with water and brush off any residue.
