Plant Overview

For decorators with a more artistic flair, don’t settle for just one color scheme! The Tri-Color Dragon Tree is a gorgeous addition to any backdrop, and its hardy nature means it’ll thrive in virtually any spot. Its slender, sword-shaped leaves have green and red margins, with a thin stripe of white and yellow - an incomparable color composition present in nature (no artificial nasties here!) This Tri-Color Dragon Tree is versatile and adaptable to a variety of climates and light sources. Plus, as a natural air-purifier, it works hard to detoxify your home and reduce formaldehyde levels in the air.

Tri-Color Dragon Tree - Care Practices

  • Light: Bright indirect light. Leaves are sensitive and can burn easily from direct light or hot dry temperatures.
  • Water: Water thoroughly and remove excess water. Do not allow the soil to completely dry out.
  • Humidity: Prefers higher levels of humidity - invest in a humidifier for best results.
  • Temperature: Comfortable in consistent room temperature, usually from 18°C to 24°C.
  • Fertilizer: For best results, use a water soluble fertilizer mix (20-20-20) once a month.
  • Soil: Standard soil that allows for moisture retention and adequate drainage to prevent over watering.
  • Propagation: Stem cuttings or air layering in spring, or seeds before the first frost in winter.
  • Repotting: Can be done every 12-18 months. Spring, summer and early fall are the best times for repotting.
  • Cleaning Tip: Remove dry or damaged leaves by gently pulling them off.
  • Toxicity: Mildly toxic, can irritate your pet’s stomach if ingested.

Tri-Color Dragon Tree - Common Problems

Why does my Tri-Color Dragon Tree have dry patches/streaks on its leaves?

This may be due to too much direct sunlight, which can cause scorching or color fading.

I haven’t put my Dragon Tree in the sun but it still looks burnt!

This is likely a sign of overfertilization, as the roots can burn from excessive salt build-up. Try using your fertilizer less frequently or at quarter strength for different results.

Why are my Tri-Color Dragon Tree’s leaf tips yellow?

This could also be a reaction to overfertilisation, or alternatively too much fluoride present in tap water - Dragon Trees are very sensitive to nutrition inadequacies so try feeding it with collected rainwater or purified water instead.

Signs of Overwatering: Root rot, browning, leaf drop, soft leaves/trunk

Common Pests: Check for mealy bugs, scale, and spider mites.

What is the best environment for this plant?

Dragon Trees will thrive best in medium, indirect light, making it a great indoor plant for homes and office spaces.
