Plant Overview

Rhaphidophora decursiva is a giant climbing plant that will produce aerial roots and gorgeous glossy leaves that fenestrate (split) as they mature, similar to the well-known ‘Swiss Cheese Plant’. Native to China and the Indian subcontinent, this robust beauty can deliver a fantastic tropical atmosphere to any room. Mature leaves can grow up to 30-50cm in length and when supported, the plant can climb up to 40” tall. Being a shade-loving and drought-tolerant specimen, this is an easy to care for houseplant with a big impact.

How to Care for Alocasia ‘Black Velvet’

  • Light: Position this plant somewhere with bright, indirect light. This will encourage the characterist fenestration of the leaves (splitting).
  • Water: This plant is fairly forgiving when it comes to watering, however, it will thrive best in consistently moist soil. Water once the top inch is dry. Do not let the plant sit in water.
  • Humidity: Medium to high humidity. Mist the upper and lower surfaces of the leaves foliage using clean water and a spray bottle.
  • Temperature: As a tropical plant, it will enjoy warm environments. However, it is relatively hardy and will withstand cooler inside temperatures in the winter.
  • Fertilizer: Feed with a slow-release, all-purpose house plant fertiliser in springtime.
  • Soil: This plant will grow best in mildly acid, light and well-draining compost. Claggy, wet soil can cause root rot and should be avoided.
  • Propagation: Easily propagated via cuttings or air layering of the aerial roots.
  • Repotting: Increase the pot size gradually once the roots have become pot bound. Giving more space to the roots will allow for larger leaves to flourish.
  • Toxicity: This plant is toxic to humans and animals and should not be ingested.

Dragon Tail  - Common Problems

Why are the leaves of my Dragon Tail turning brown at the edges?

This is a symptom of low humidity or under-watering that causes a salt build-up in the plant. Remedy this problem by regularly misting the leaves with clean water and ensure you are watering the plant enough. Dragon Tail’s like moist soil, and can be re-watered once the top inch of the soil surface has dried out.

Why does my Dragon Tail have yellow leaves?

This is likely to be the result of over-watering. Whilst Dragon Tail’s like moist soil, they do not like to be overwatered or left to sit in wet soil. It’s about getting the balance right. It may be worth considering the potting mix and repotting the plant in a lighter alternative mix that is well-draining and aerated.

Why are the leaves of my Dragon Tail drooping?

Again, this is most likely to be a sign of underwatering and dry soil. If you have accidentally let your plant dry out completely, it may be time for a pot soaking. Do this by placing the pot in a bucket of water and leaving it to soak for around 45 minutes, allowing the water to soak up from the bottom drainage holes. Once the soil feels consistently moist, you can remove it from the bucket and let it drain completely.
