Plant care tips

  • Light: Can tolerate bright light conditions with no direct sunlight.
  • Temperature: Prefers temperatures of 18°C to 24°C. Keep away from drafts in the winter.
  • Water: Keep soil evenly moist and allow the top 3-5cm of soil to dry before watering. Drain excess water.
  • Humidity: Appreciates higher levels of humidity, making it perfect for kitchens or bathrooms. Try setting your plant on a water-filled pebble tray to help with this.
  • Fertilizer: Fertilize monthly with a balanced fertilizer when the plant is actively growing (normally in spring and summer).
  • Soil: Use a well-draining, high organic matter soil mix.
  • Repotting: Can be repotted every 12-18 months. Choose a pot that is 5cm later in diameter than the current pot.
  • Cleaning: Wipe the leaves down regularly to keep them looking glossy.
  • Toxic: The bark and foliage contain saponins which are poisonous to pets.

Can I grow a coffee plant in my house?

Yes, you definitely can! Although, you won’t be roasting any coffee beans anytime soon (this takes approximately 3 to 4 years). With proper care, it will flower on maturity and you may get a few of the berries that contain coffee beans. But in the meantime, you’ll get to enjoy its dark glossy leaves. Remember to place your plant in a bright location with no direct sunlight.

Coffee Plant - Common Problems

Why do the leaves of my coffee plant have brown edges?

Check the humidity periodically. This is usually an aesthetic problem and can be dealt with by increasing humidity and trimming off brown leaf edges.

Why are the leaves of my coffee plant dropping?

This problem is usually associated with overwatering. You may also notice new growth becoming soft and brown. Check your watering schedule and reduce watering if needed - let the top 5cm of soil dry before watering again.

Why does my plant have brown spots on its leaves?

Coffee plants love a bright location but can’t tolerate direct sunlight. This is known as leaf scorch or sunburn. Move the plant away from the direct sunlight.

Common Pests: Check for mealy bugs, aphids, and spider mites.
