Plant Overview

Alocasia ‘Pink Dragon’, also known as ‘Elephant Ears Pink Dragon’, is a gorgeous ornamental plant native to the subtropical regions of Asia and East Australia. With evergreen, broad leaves with striking deep veins and burgundy coloured undersides feeding off pink shaded stems, it’s no wonder this is a popular house plant.

The glossy leaves can grow as large as 50 cm in length and with good care, will stay elegant throughout the year! It likes a humid environment and will enjoy a misting now and again. This beauty will tolerate both full and partial shade, making it a versatile plant that can work in many areas of a home.

How to Care for Alocasia ‘Black Velvet’

  • Light: This plant likes to be positioned in areas of full or partial shade. It will not like direct sunlight, so if you place it near a window be sure it’s west-facing.
  • Water: When it comes to watering, this plant is fairly tolerant. It prefers moist soil and can be watered frequently in its growing season. However, be sure to let the top 3cm-5cm of the soil dry out before re-watering. Use your finger to test the moisture of the soil before watering.
  • Humidity: This plant likes humidity and will appreciate a regular misting with clean water.
  • Temperature: As this plant comes from a tropical environment, it grows best in warmer, room temperatures. Generally between 15 to 30 °C. In the winter months, you may want to move it away from drafty windows.
  • Fertiliser: You can fertilise this plant when it is in active growth during the spring and summer. Use a liquid house-plant fertiliser or mulch the top of the container with fresh compost.
  • Soil: The ‘Pink Dragon’ Alocasia grows best in well-draining, porous soil. This is to prevent it from becoming waterlogged. Mix one part sand or perlite with equal parts composted bark and potting soil to create an ideal growing medium.
  • Propagation: During its dormant season, you can propagate this plant by dividing up its rhizomes.
  • Repotting: This plant will stay compact and does not need regular re-potting - once every 2-3 years should be enough.
  • Cleaning Tip: Keep the leaves dust-free by carefully wiping them with a damp cloth and water. Remove any dead or damaged leaves.
  • Toxicity: Toxic to humans and pets if ingested.

Alocasia 'Pink Dragon' - Common Problems

Does my Alocasia 'Pink Dragon' have any common pests?

Alocasias are not pest or disease resistant and tend to be popular with Spider Mites and Mealybugs. To keep your plant as healthy and pest-free as possible, ensure that you keep it clean and well ventilated. You should remove any dead, damaged or diseased material that may harbour infections. As just like us humans, a stressed plant will become sick more easily. If the plant becomes infested with pests, isolate it and spray with an organic insecticide.

Why are there browning tips on the leaves of my Alocasia 'Pink Dragon’?

Sometimes this is just a sign of a maturing leaf, however, it can more commonly be a symptom of low humidity. To increase humidity for the plant, regularly mist the foliage with a clean spray bottle. Alternatively, you could position this plant in the bathroom as this is a more humid environment.
