Plant Overview

The stunning Alocasia ‘Black Velvet’ is native to Southeast Asia where it is found covering jungle floors. An impactful evergreen perennial, it was formerly rare and now readily available as a houseplant as the result of tissue culture propagation. This is a gorgeous plant that will stay compact in your home, as it doesn’t often reach more than 50cm in height and width. With striking, heart-shaped, dark leaves and stand-out pale green, white or silver veins, it’s a perfect feature plant for a smaller space!

How to Care for Alocasia ‘Black Velvet’

  • Light: This plant likes bright, indirect light. It is tolerant of lower light levels.
  • Water: Use your finger to check on moisture in the soil and be sure to allow the top 5cm of the soil to dry out before re-watering. Water carefully to prevent soggy soil as this plant is prone to root rot.
  • Humidity: A lover of humidity! Best between a range of 60-75%
  • Temperature: Most comfortable between 15ºC and 27ºC or higher. It dislikes hot and cold drafts, so be sure to keep away from radiators and cold windows. It will grow faster at higher temperatures but is unlikely to flower indoors.
  • Fertiliser: Feed every 4 weeks during the growing season with a balanced fertiliser. Apply at half-strength if using an all-purpose fertiliser.
  • Soil: Best to plant in coarse, well-draining soil. You can create this by mixing 2 parts of perlite and orchid bark to 1 part potting compost.
  • Propagation: During its dormant season, you can propagate this plant by dividing up its rhizomes or separating its offsets.
  • Repotting: Do not repot this plant often as it likes being rootbound. It should not need repotting more than once every 2-3 years.
  • Cleaning Tip: Keep the leaves dust-free by carefully wiping them with a damp cloth and water. Remove any dead or damaged leaves.
  • Toxicity: Toxic to humans and pets if ingested.

Alocasia 'Black Velvet' - Common Problems

Why has my Alocasia 'Black Velvet' started sulking?

It is likely that due to stress, the plant has slipped into dormancy. Treat it with some loving patience and be sure to water it minimally if the soil is overwatered. This plant doesn’t like to be sat in wet soil, and when it is in dormancy, it doesn’t require much water. It may also go dormant in temperatures or light levels that are too low. Provide warm and humid conditions and your alocasia will come back to life.

Why are there yellow spots appearing on my Alocasia 'Black Velvet'?

Be watchful of this because yellowing can be a warning of root rot, which this plant is prone to. If the soil is too heavy and holds too much moisture, switch to a coarser soil that provides better drainage. Yellow spots can also be a sign of inconsistent watering - too much or too little.

Why are the young leaves on my Alocasia 'Black Velvet' pale?

Young leaves start their days pale and will darken as they mature, so this may not be anything to worry about. However, too much bright light will also bleach the leaves of this plant, so you may also want to consider its position. Alocasia ‘Black Velvet’ is tolerant of lower light levels and is likely to thrive in a more shady spot.

Common Pests

The spider mite is a common pest for this Alocasia. They thrive in dry conditions and then establish easily when the plant is stressed in low humidity. A weekly shower can help control spider mites.
